Halloween

I'm glad that I have kids for a lot of reasons. One of those reasons is because they have really revived Halloween for me. Since about 6th grade, Halloween has been my least favorite holiday. Pretty bah humbug, I know. I guess that was when I hit the stage of being too old to trick or treat but not having anything else very fun to do on Halloween. But having kids has made it fun again. I have fun doing things as a mom: finding them costumes, going to the pumpkin patch and picking our own pumpkins, Halloween parties, etc. This year we went to our first ever Trunk or Treat and had a great time. Here we are in our costumes. Mini was a fairy princess or just a princess, depending on whether or not she was in the mood for her wings. Emmy was a unicorn. I wore my 9th grade cheer outfit and Adam wore my 9th grade cheer sweater and warm-ups. (We actually had some people ask if we were cheerleaders together!)

Not related at all to Halloween, but here's a video of Mini doing a cartwheel--not bad for three years old! And the next video is of Emmy. She's so funny. She's conditioned to say "cheese" whenever I point the camera at her. I love how she says marshmallow ("mallow") and water and she says them both on this video.

I love the videos. I've never learned to do a cartwheel so I'm extremely impressed with Mini.

I know what you mean about Halloween. I haven't been too into either. I'm impressed with Mini's cartwheel!

First thing I thought of when I saw that first picture of your blog was "oh my gosh!" Can't belive you fit into your 9th grade cheer outfit (miss skinny... especially after two kids, very impressive!), that is too funny. I LOVE IT!!!!! And I am lovin Adam wearing the sweater and sweat pants, so great. You guys are too cute!

Look at me, doing a blog post and joining Facebook in the same week! I guess it's time for an update since it's only been four months. I'll start with Liv. I can't believe she's already 4+ months old! She is doing great! I feel so blessed that she is so healthy and developing perfectly so far. In the last week she has started rolling over (multiple times so she ends up far away from where I put her) and grabbing things. She has also decided she doesn't like nursing from mommy. :( We'll see how long I can stand pumping... Usually she is a happy little person, but in the last two weeks she has screamed for an hour+ straight while being babysat (sorry Ang and Anne-Marie!). What a stinker!  Adam did a "TDY" or temporary tour of duty in Guangzhou for two weeks. The kids and I joined him for the first week, as the kids were off school. We felt very blessed, as the Department provided housing for us which was fantastic! It was a spacious three bedroom apartment and we had access to a breakfast buffet for a nominal price. The complex we stayed in is where all the consulate families there stay, so it gave us a feel for what a post in Guangzhou would be like. It was in a fantastic location, close to downtown, a beautiful city park, and the consulate. We had fun exploring the city--Guangzhou is very nice. Behind us is Canton Tower, a recognizable Guangzhou landmark. When it was first completed in 2009 it was the tallest tower in the world but was passed by the Shanghai Tower. Now it's the second tallest tower and fifth tallest free standing structure in the world. We went to the top one of the nights we were there.  The Guangzhou Circle was interesting to see. Acc...

Olivia Lori Birk

So I am finally posting about the arrival of Olivia Lori Birk! She totally surprised me by coming a week early on October 24. At about 8:30 I started having some painful contractions, but continued with my day and had a bowl of cereal (which I saw again about an hour and a half later). I was absolutely in denial though because I was so convinced she would come in November. I sat down on the couch and started timing contractions at 8:50 and they were three minutes apart. So I called Adam and he, remembering how fast things went with Emily, got home right away. We dropped Mini and Emmy off at my wonderful neighbor's house and were walking in the hospital at 9:44. I went to the triage room and was at a 4. From there it was get my IV, get fluids and antibiotics, answer a million questions, all the while dying with the contractions. I got my epidural around 11 and they checked me right after and I was at a 9. My water broke at 11:50, and after 4 pushes Olivia Lori was born at 12:11. Now...
